An organ first installed in the town’s hall 132 years ago is now back there, to the joy of community members who tracked down the instrument in a North Melbourne church and secured it for $6000 through a blind auction.

Beechworth Organ Society president Mark Stephens said Wakeley Pipe Organs dismantled the organ and brought it up by truck.

“Everyone’s just over the moon about it,” he said.

“It’s going to be a centrepiece for our Beechworth heritage, we’ll have concerts and organ recitals.” 

Mr Stephens said it was believed the organ came from an English stately home in the 1860s before arriving at Beechworth Town Hall.

“Here you’re looking at something that’s probably 150 years old, it’s made out of little bits of wood, wire and leather and it’s a survivor,” he said.

“It’s very small by organ standards, it’s only got six stops and sits beautifully on stage where it was first intended.”
