Once Albury mayor Kevin Mack opened the 2018 festival at Albury Entertainment Centre, it was time for the six years and under jazz/hip hop/funk soloists.
The eisteddfod received 2342 entries across the five disciplines of dance, music, speech and drama, debating and highland dance, down from 2743 last year and 2579 in 2016.
Only debating increased its overall entries, up five to 37, although the number of dance duo/trio/quads rose from 87 to 97.
Dance entries (1541) comprise about 65 per cent of the 2018 total.
Cr Mack said the event was a fantastic opportunity for hundreds of performers to display their skills.
“We know we have a wealth of young talent from right across the community so the eisteddfod offers a great chance to see the next generation of local stars shining on stage,” he said.
The dance sessions for the 8/10 year age groups continue Friday.
