LABOR’S Darren Cameron won’t rule out standing in the upcoming NSW state election against a new Liberal candidate in the wake of Greg Aplin’s retirement.
Cr Cameron previously contested the seat of Albury in 2011 against Mr Aplin.
“I am ruling nothing in or out at this stage,” Cr Cameron said.
He has been one of Mr Aplin’s harshest critics, but wished the long-serving Liberal all the best in retirement.
“While we’ve had our disagreements obviously, he is a very nice gentleman and deserves a happy retirement,” Cr Cameron said.
“Who the Liberal Party selects is a matter entirely up to them.
“We will continue to pursue our own preselection processes according to our rules.”
Cr Cameron hoped Labor would have a candidate locked in before Christmas ahead of the March poll.
Meanwhile, another Albury councillor and Greens member Amanda Cohn is also tight-lipped on her plans to contest the seat of Albury.
“The Greens run a grassroots, democratic preselection process where every member who lives in the seat gets a vote, but we haven’t gone through that process yet,” she said.
Asked whether she will run for preselection when it opens, Cr Cohn said: “At this stage I am really focused on continuing my work on council”.
The deputy mayor ruled out running for Albury mayor next month.
Cr Cohn stood in the most recent federal election in Farrer against Sussan Ley and attracted 8.2 per cent of the primary vote.
Meanwhile, Albury Council has paid tribute to Mr Aplin in a statement.
Mayor Kevin Mack said Mr Aplin had been an outstanding servant of the community during his terms in parliament.
“Greg has been a friend to the council and to the community through his tireless work to attract new funding, services and facilities to our city,” he said.
“On behalf of my fellow councillors and the wider community, we thank Greg for his dedication to improving the Albury electorate and we wish him and his family all the best in the next stage of their lives.”
