We need to keep pace
I read with interest the Saturday article by Greens endorsed candidate for Northern Victoria Nicole Rowan where she stated that the Greens have a plan to transition Victoria to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030. She says she wants to see the closure of all base load coal fired power stations to reduce pollution.

At present coal accounts for 75 per cent of Australia’s electricity generation followed by gas 16 per cent, hydro 5 per cent, wind 2 per cent and solar at 0.1 per cent.
Reliable, affordable energy is essential for modern Australians to maintain living standards and for business to prosper.
Unlike some European countries (such as Germany) with high levels of renewables, Australia is not able to purchase power at times of high demand from neighbouring countries with emission free Nuclear power stations.
Modern High Energy Low Emission (HELE) coal fired power stations are currently the best means of producing electrical power where demand can be increased quickly and economically when we experience unexpected extremes of hot or cold.
This week our population will pass the 25 million mark with projections of 38 million by 2050. Our power production will need to keep pace.
No government will survive the day when Australians are forced to endure long periods without electricity. The time for action is now!

It’s time we stood up
Well once again the left Greens are talking about climate change (Greg Bourne, Border Mail, August 4).
It’s clear Greg you have too much money and you don’t care about huge price rises in electricity and gas – have you ever worked in a business that requires electricity? Probably not.
If wind and solar is so great then take the billions away in subsidies and let’s see how cheap they become and how many overseas companies invest.
The only reason overseas businesses invest is to make money, money us taxpayers have to pay them.
Greg, how many thousands of people go to bed at dusk to stay warm or go to shopping centres all day just because they cant afford to stay at home and stay warm? I’m looking at putting solar on, the only reason is to reduce my electricity bill, not because I’m Green and want to save the planet.
Wake up Greg, we do nothing for the world climate, so send your left-centred spin to China, India and Pakistan or head back to England and choke them with your dribble. It’s time Australians stand up for Australia first.

We must preserve past
Re: Meramie. I only hope that this lovely old home can be saved.
I ran this building as a boarding house in the 1980s, wonderful memories! You would have covered many items in your paper over this period. We housed people from all over the world as far away as Chile.
I understand the financial aspect, but the historical need to preserve the colourful past is important.
