Temperatures are currently minus 4.9 degrees at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek with an expected chilly maximum of minus 4 degrees at Hotham today keeping the powder light and dry for mint turns all week.
At Falls Creek, 24cm of fresh, dry powder has fallen in the last 24 hrs with the average snow depth now at 141 cm. While at Mount Hotham, there is 22cm of cold dry snow on the stakes, and many areas with much deeper wind drifts. The resort is likely to break through the 150cm snow base this week.
Both Hotham and Falls Creek have phenomenal snow conditions throughout the resort and with more storm fronts and solid snowfalls expected in August, Hotham Alpine Resort has announced a season extension – the lifts will keep spinning until Sunday, October 7.
“We are delighted to offer our guests the opportunity to ski and board into October. With spring conditions so wonderful with more blue skies and exciting après events, there were so many reasons we had to extend this year,” says Belinda Trembath, General Manager of Mt Hotham Ski Company.
The announcement comes after a record-breaking June which saw the resort snow base depth exceed measured totals since 1993. It is also now the second year in a row Mount Hotham and Falls Creek have announced a season extension thanks to above average snow conditions.
But beware the back country – expert skiers and snowboarders need to take care today and this week. With the new snow comes considerable risk due to the variable base over the last week, according to Bill Barker, long time patroller at Hotham: “There is considerable avalanche danger in the back-country today. 10 cm of graupel (snow that looks and acts like bean bag balls) has fallen onto a very hard base, and now we have some denser wind blown snow sitting on top which is a good recipe for unstable snow. Stay away from steep lee slopes. There will be great turns out there but stick to lower angled and densely treed terrain, and watch out for terrain traps.”
In conjunction with their extension announcement, Mount Hotham’s Spring Pass is now on sale giving avid snow lovers unlimited access to both Mount Hotham and Falls Creek ski resorts in spring from September 1.
