Taken with the 46th pick in last year's AFL draft, Paton was forced to bide his time in the VFL after being named an emergency 10 times this season.
The news was broken to the 20-year-old at around one o’clock on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints face Essendon on Friday night, a massive stage for Paton's debut after his side turned in a disappointing performance against the Western Bulldogs last weekend.
Paton joins the likes of Kiewa-Sandy Creek's Kayne Turner as Tallangatta League alumni to go on to play at AFL level.
After being named in the best several weeks in a row in the VFL, Paton's case for selection became too pressing to ignore.
Paton surged into the draft conversation in 2017, improving from relative obscurity to end up being selected in the All-Australian under-18 team.
