THE live sheep export ban being promoted by Farrer MP Sussan Ley has been partly the subject of a poll conducted in the neighbouring federal electorate of Indi.

The poll was conducted by ReachTEL last week and also grilled respondents about their voting intentions ahead of the next federal election which is now expected to be held next May.
Ms Ley has been pursuing a private member’s bill this year to ban live sheep exports in the northern summer from next year and has threatened to cross the floor of parliament and support a Labor amendment on the issue.
She also wants the trade phased out over five years.
In late May, the Coalition government pulled a bill applying more regulation to the live sheep trade with the issue due to return to the parliament in coming weeks.
Indi independent MP Cathy McGowan has backed the end to the summer trade.
A spokeswoman for Ms McGowan said the Indi MP didn’t commission the ReachTEL poll and other major players in the looming election also ruled out any involvement.
Among questions posed on the live sheep export ban were “do you support or oppose an end of live sheep exports from Australia?”, “would you oppose the government assisting farmers who currently export live sheep to transition away from live sheep trade?” and “in the next federal election would you be more or less likely to vote for a candidate who supported a phase out of live sheep exports?”.
The make-up of the field for the next election in Indi is far from settled with Ms McGowan with an unconfirmed starter.
Also, the Liberals and Nationals are sttil to call for nominations for pre-selections in the seat Ms McGowan has held since 2013.
