In response to Lorna Read’s critique of Albury mayor Kevin Mack and his leadership of Albury Council in her letter (‘Please, Mr Aplin, stay on’, The Border Mail, August 11) the letter writer was worried that Councillor Mack or one of his fellow councillors may attempt to run for office at the next state election.

In my opinion our next member for Albury needs to be a member of the Liberal Party. The LNP will win the state election in March. A local member will get better results working from within the party in power than on the outside as an adversary.
It needs to be someone who has successfully run their own business. We need a member who will not waste our tax dollars and who has business sense. It needs to be someone who has experienced living elsewhere and has returned to the region because they can see the advantages of this electorate. We need someone who has relatives in the area – this will help them stay honest, hardworking and compassionate.
We need someone who is mature, has grown children and has plenty of life experiences, someone who has been active as a volunteer and has unselfishly helped others in need. It should be someone who is not a lawyer. We need another lawyer in Parliament like a hole in the head.
The future of our electorate depends on the correct choice. Let’s not stuff it up!

Support clean energy
The current federal debate over the National Energy Guarantee could have major implications for investment and jobs in our region.
The incredibly weak emissions targets of the NEG would currently be met by 2021, just a year after the policy goes into effect. This could leave nine years of stagnation in renewable energy across the country.
The benefits of renewable energy overwhelmingly flow to regional Australia.
Victoria’s renewables industry employs about 8000 people and it is important that the NEG ensures future growth in this sector. Considering the large public support for renewable energy across North East Victoria, I call on our local State MPs – Bill Tilley, Steph Ryan and Tim McCurdy – to support the Victorian government’s conditions that would create a strong renewable energy future for regional Victoria under the NEG.
A well planned and orderly clean energy transition offers so many benefits for rural and regional Australia. I call on our locally elected state representatives supported our clean energy future.

Put them before a court
The revelations from the banking Royal Commission continue to show the greed and lack of morailty from some of this country’s most powerful institutions. Charging fees for no service, orchestrated attempts to pull the wool over the eyes of consumers and an insatiable greed seem to be the dominant flavours of the foul-tasting dish.
Surely it is necessary to identify some of the individuals responsible for this sort of behaviour and have them face the consequences of their actions in the form of criminal charges. Despite the great work of the Royal Commission, I can’t help but think anything less than criminal charges would be a cop out. This kind of thievery needs to be treated with the same contempt as any other kind.
