The annual Blue Tie Ball will raise money to support the professional development of nurses caring for prostate cancer patients in the region.
As well as the formal ball – blue ties, gentlemen – at Commercial Club Albury on the Saturday night, an afternoon dance the next day at Lavington’s Holy Spirit hall will add to the fundraising.
Organised by the Albury-Wodonga Prostate Cancer Support Group, the ball again features live music by Tarragal. Last year’s event collected more than $6000.
Prostate cancer specialist nurse Vicki O’Reilly praised the support group for not only raising money but also awareness of prostate cancer.
“One of the needs within our area, maybe because it’s rural as well, is really getting the word out there with regards to prostate health,” she said.
“For the chaps in our area to know the risk factors involved and the conversations that they need to have and the decisions that they may need to make some day.”
Mrs O’Reilly, whose catchment area includes Albury-Wodonga, Henty, Urana, Oaklands, Wangaratta and Mansfield, helps patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
“It’s really in a nutshell a care co-ordination and supportive care role,” she said.
“I’m a good middle person for them to use.”
