The integrity of this data assists the stud principals to make breeding decisions and the same benefits pass to clients who purchase their Aloeburn sheep.
“There are several tools available in the industry to assist in determining pedigree of new lambs but none of them allow critical data, which influence breeding values, to be collected,” said Jodie.
“That information is accurate birth date, birth weight, birth status (single, twin, triplet), raising status of every lamb and to make an assessment of the maternal traits of each ewe.
“Prior to lambing all stud ewes (550 head) are hand fed to familiarise them with intervention. The ewes are in mobs of 100 head or less and when lambing starts they are patrolled every day to catch, tag and record birth details of every lamb born.”
She said Sheep Genetics have confirmed that this is the “gold standard“ for data contributed to the database to achieve maximum accuracy for ASBV’s.
