Racing Wodonga made a number of announcements on Wednesday morning, notably the aforementioned increase in prizemoney for their main race, as well as announcing rock icons Spiderbait would headline the entertainment at the Caulfield Cup meet in October.
Indie sensation Sheppard, renowned for their 2014 single ‘Geronimo’ will headline the Gold Cup.
A grand total of $321,000 will be up for grabs across the eight races on Gold Cup day, with the Ollie Cox Memorial also receiving a $10,000 boost.
Racing Wodonga CEO Tom O’Connor said the upcoming racing season would be an important one, particularly for the Gold Cup.
“It’s long been a goal of the committee to reach the six-figure mark for the main race,” he said.
“The growth of the event has demonstrated that it needs to be at that level, if not continue to grow.
“It’s great for the owners out there preparing horses and looking to position them that they can see now that the Wodonga Gold Cup is a really good target for them.”
Since the establishment of the Gold Cup public holiday, attendance has increased by more than 250 per cent.
Mr O’Connor said the holiday, which was first held in 2014, had been integral to the event’s growth.
“Without the public holiday, we wouldn’t be here,” he said.
“It’s been a real privilege to host it.
“We look at these two days (Caulfield Cup and Gold Cup) as being about more than just racing, it’s about big events and entertaining the local community.”
