The RSPCA’s annual Cupcake Day is taking place on Monday.

Participants bake a range of goods, which are then sold to raise money for the animal organisation.

Albury resident Chloe Copper is taking part in this year’s event with her colleagues at Milspec.

She is hoping to raise a few hundred dollars by selling cakes and cupcakes to other staff members.

Ms Cooper and her boyfriend, Jake Mitcheson, have firsthand experience of the work undertaken by the RSPCA.

Jake is a former volunteer and adopted a German Shepherd named Zaiah, about five years ago.

He had been fostering her and decided to permanently adopt her. 

“She’s 11 now and she’s doing very well,” Ms Cooper said.

“Jake said that when he got her, she was very skinny and had patches of hair missing.

“She was scared and timid but got comfortable very quickly.

Now she’s flat and fluffy and is very gentle and well-mannered.”

Ms Cooper said dog rescue services often had a large number of large breed dogs seeking adoption.

RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker said the fundraiser would help support the charity’s work.

“A Cupcake Day event is a delicious way for people to share their love of animals while helping to fund RSPCA Victoria’s work to end cruelty to all animals,” she said.

The service has 135,000 animals come through its shelters each year.

Cupcake Day is officially held on Monday, but participants can host an event on any day in August.

According to the RSPCA, $25 can provide a kitten with a bed, litter tray and meal, $55 can pay for a week of antibiotics for a sick animal and $150 can desex a dog or cat. 

Ms Cooper said she was considering volunteering. 

“It's not only dogs and cats they help – as they say, they help animals big and small,” she said. 

“They have the animals’ best interests in mind. 

"They give a voice to the voiceless.”

Ms Cooper said she would encourage anyone thinking of adopting a pet to give it a go, after they've done their research. 

“Dogs help with everything from mental illness to physical ailments,” she said. 

“The dogs you get from the rescues are beautiful animals. 

"They go through behaviour classes and the volunteers make sure they go to a good home.”
