No such award, named after the ex-AFL ruckman, exists of course, but maybe it should after a meeting of the best mullets the league has seen in the modern era.
Rouse and North Albury’s Josh Lloyd are the only players sporting ‘squirrel pelts’ at the moment and, ironically, they played on each other last Saturday.
Lloyd’s ‘mudflap’ just happened.
“I just started growing it, it was a bit of a joke at the start with a few of the boys,” he said.
You could get $1.01 for the only other reason known to mankind for growing a mullet.
“I did it as a bet to grow my hair long,” Rouse said.
“I had a dress up ball, so I thought I’d annoy the girlfriend, who said to dress up nicely.”
Now Mikayla Leyonhjelm must have a fairly decent sense of humour because you just can’t take your eyes off her boyfriend’s mullet, it’s mesmeric.
Normally prior to a game, a player might shake his opponent’s hand and wish him all the best.
But etiquette goes out the window when it comes to comparing mullets.
“I actually complimented him at the start on his,” Lloyd said.
“I thought he might have also had me for length, he’s got a lot straighter hair than me.”
And not only did Rouse win the battle, he also won the war.
“I only had two shots, I kicked a point and the other didn’t make the distance,” Lloyd said.
“I think he won on the weekend, the better mullet won.”
The obvious question now is, will the ‘achy-breaky-bad-mistakey’ last?
“I don’t know, I’ve got to get rid of it before I go on (physio) placement because it’s quite unprofessional,” Rouse said.
Placement is set down for November.
