The club’s lease expires in May next year, but the present deal doesn’t permit the club to sublet the kitchen area it wants to use to provide meals on a more regular basis to its own members and visitors to the town.
If approval was granted it would require a new lease deal being drawn up and requiring the club to pay all electricity and gas charges.
Costs to use the area are unknown due to no electricity meter in the kitchen area, but have been estimated at around $50,000.
Cr Fred Longmire said council had to be consistent in its approach to userpays with usergroups of council-owned facilities.
“No one has the big stick in this situation,” he said.
Club president Ian Bilney said it accepted council’s decision.
“We just thought it would help getting people down to the club having tea and maybe picking up some more bowlers,” he said.
“It’s usually only open when bowls are on.
“There are people who come to the caravan park on holidays and walk over to the club expecting to get a meal.”
The council will go ahead and install an electricity meter.
Director Kristy Kay said the building not being energy efficient was a challenge to all users including the bowlers.
“We are trying to work towards some improvements in the future,” she said.
“Hopefully we’ll have some upgrades to the airconditioning and insulation in the ceiling that might help them be more viable.”
