The revelation Cleanaway had to settle on another site by December 31 this year was made this week during an Albury Council workshop as part of a waste management update.
Director Brad Ferris said a proviso in accepting the latest contract variation resulting from Federation Council overturning a joint regional planning panel approval for the Howlong tip late last year was Cleanaway embarking on an expression of interest process for a fresh location.
Mr Ferris also revealed compost waste from participating council areas of Albury, Wodonga, Indigo and Federation council areas is being transported to Stanhope in the Goulburn Valley for processing.
“They’ve spoken to a number of local businesses one-on-one regarding possible opportunities,” he said.
“They are about to go out on a public EOI process and have reconfirmed over recent weeks that process will be finalised by December 31 which was part of our agreement with them.
“Primarily the demand for it is outside of our LGA though.
“The options are we can secure a local processing facility and then the end product would be transported to the farming sector.”
Cleanaway confirmed the EOI process was about to begin in a statement to The Border Mail.
“Cleanaway will consider alternative local uses of the food and garden organics it collects, pursuant to an expression of interest process to be conducted by it later this year,” a company spokesperson said.
It has also had interest from the vermiculture industry with a large scale facility being established near Carrathool.
