The 16-year-old represented the School Sports Victoria under-16 boys team at the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast in August, where he impressed selectors.
His outstanding week allowed him to book a place on the national schools team, which represents Australia in the Four Nations Whitsun Tournament in Mannheim, Germany, from May 25 to June 2 next year.
Davis started as a nine-year old, playing for Magpies, Wodonga and Wombats.
He has represented Hockey Albury-Wodonga and North East Knights at junior state and country championships, as well as featuring in Victoria’s representative sides since he was 11.
His success demanded a big commitment, which included travelling twice a week from Albury for training to be part of the respective teams.
Davis was named player of the tournament at the Australian Championships in Darwin in 2014 and last year played under-16s and division one for Wombats, taking out the division one best and fairest award.
At the beginning of the year, Davis moved to Melbourne to attend Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School on a scholarship and he currently plays for Camberwell in the men’s Premier League.
However, Davis’ former Wombats teammates won’t play a part in this year’s division one men’s finals series, which starts on Sunday at Albury Hockey Centre.
Minor premiers and defending champions Norths take on Magpies in the qualifying semi-final, while United and Falcons play in the elimination fixture.
Norths coach Jeremy Payne is expecting a tight contest between the top-two teams.
“We’re at full strength, there’s a couple of niggling injuries, but I think everyone is feeling healthy and confident heading into the first final,” Payne said.
“I think Norths have the highest number of Spitfires players, we’ve got six or seven that back up and play for Norths on Sunday.
“It’s hard every week, but it’s good for us as a team because we’ve got plenty of guys that know how to play that elite level of hockey.”
In division one women, Falcons take on Wodonga with the winner to progress to the grand final, while it’s sudden death for Norths and Magpies.
