NED KELLY biographer Ian Jones has died aged 86.

The former Beechworth citizen died soon after 6am on Friday in Melbourne.
Mr Jones suffered a stroke five years ago and had been in a poor condition recently.
He would have celebrated his 87th birthday on September 22.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised but it is anticipated Mr Jones will be farewelled at Beechworth next Friday.

In addition to his fascination with the bushranger which resulted in Ned Kelly: A Short Life, Mr Jones had a long career in television production.
He worked on drama shows such as The Sullivans and Homicide.
