The group, celebrating its second anniversary this month, has been ramping up its focus on waste recently under the guidance of new member and Border artist Tracie MacVean.
On Sunday a group of members and residents took to Ernest Grant Park as part of the first of many clean-up days, launched off the back of a War on Waste event last month.
“About 25 people attended that event and the overwhelming feeling I got from it was people wanted to do clean-up days,” Ms MacVean said.
“We chose the oval as our first session because it is central, and hopefully we will have some different ideas of other places we can target around Thurgoona.
“We’d like to make it a monthly thing.
“It’s good to know some people pick up rubbish regularly, but it’s a problem that needs more community involvement.”
Ms MacVean said the group was working towards having recycling bins introduced at Thurgoona Plaza and had engaged centre management.
“By noon the bins there are overflowing … people aren’t going to recycle if you don’t provide the facility, and they’re not going to take their recycling home,” she said.
“We hope to encourage people do the right thing with rubbish.
“We hope to see new people at our next clean-up days and hear their ideas as well.”
TCAG member Bridget O’Connor said among the other goals of the group was to get a Return and Earn drop-off point in Thurgoona.
“When you look at where they (Return and Earn machines) are distributed at the moment, they’re all very close to each other,” she said.
“We’re wanting to approach the right people to get one here.
“We’re also looking at commercial building waste.”
TCAG has been active in development issues, environmental protection and most recently in renewable energy.
In November a forum was held with Albury Council and Mondo Power to float a community energy project and those plans to be discussed again this month.
