Daack Makeup Academy founder Felicity Cahill won the Hair and Beauty Award in the 2018 AusMumpreneur Awards in Melbourne on Friday night.
Having only opened the business – named after sons Dominick, 5, and Isaack, 3 – in January, Mrs Cahill said major health issues had beset both her husband Lincoln and Isaack during 2015.
Mrs Cahill said Isaack was born with kidney problems while Lincoln was found to have brain tumours; both needed surgery and monitoring in future.
She said that experience had given her a clear perspective on life.
“I’m all about the empowerment of other women,” she said.
“I came from a business management and accounting background but I saw a gap in the market for teaching people to apply makeup.
“The award is recognition that you can be a mother, a wife and a businesswoman.”
Riverina businesswoman Jade Phillips placed second in the Sustainability Award.
Little Hipster Kubby co-founder Mrs Phillips said she was thrilled with the recognition for the business.
“It’s credit for the hard work we have done building the business especially with a young family,” she said.
“It reinforces that just because we live in regional NSW doesn’t mean we can’t build a national business.”
Little Hipster Kubby now sold products into every state and territory in Australia after it got its first order from Tasmania this week.
BRIE Corporate founder Rebecca O’Brien was a finalist in the Retail Business Award for the second year in a row.
Presented by The AusMumpreneur Network, the AusMumpreneur Awards recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation.
Wodonga design business Kat and Fox owner Katharine Rattray was a guest judge this year. She was runner-up in the Network Excellence Award in 2017.
