The bullets were powerful enough to penetrate a brick wall and hit items in a girl’s bedroom on the other side. 

Johannes Heyboer discharged the weapon into the Harrison Street property in March, hitting a couch, a doll and a painting and leaving bullet holes in a front window. 

No-one was at home at the time.

Heyboer drove himself to the Benalla Police Station after the incident and remained in custody until his sentence last week.

An earlier court hearing was told there were mental health concerns for Heyboer, who lives next door to the victim. 

The .22 rifle had been stolen from a property in Wangaratta earlier in the day. 

He was given a 164 day prison sentence and released given the time he had already served.

He must complete a three year community corrections order, and must complete 300 hours of community service.
