Autonomous claimed a one-length win from barrier 11, with King Kohei and Lost Command rounding out the top three.
“He jumped well, I told him (McDougall) he had to be a wizard,” Hanley said while celebrating the win.
“He said, ‘I’ve got to be a wizard to do what you want’, I said ‘you’re a wizard mate’.
“I wanted one out, one back and that’s where he ended up.
“He won with a leg in the air in the finish.”
Hanley is uncertain of his next move for Autonomous.
Meanwhile, The Reverend Demon, which is part-owned by Neale Daniher, finished sixth.
Flemington trainer Levi Kavanagh had earlier claimed races three and five.
Blinky O’Reilly ($4.80) grabbed the first win over 1590m, while Smart Stiletto ($3.90) claimed the 1400m event.
