With veteran Nic O’Bryan best on ground, the Hoppers’ experience proved telling as they completed a fairytale finish to the season.
Dean Bigger also played a starring role in the difficult conditions with support coming from Craig and Luke Ednie and ruckman David O’Dwyer.
“It’s fantastic,” coach Craig Ednie said.
“At the start of the year we lost about 18 of our premiership players but we worked hard and look at what we’ve done.
“We’ve come from sixth place.
“This is better than last year.”
Former Ovens and Murray stars Judd Porter and Brad Murray played in the victorious side with Porter’s brother, Daine, starring in Tarrawingee’s flag on the same day.
Ednie has been reappointed for next season.
“It’s pretty special,” Ednie said.
“The back six have been fantastic for the last four weeks.
“The young blokes were fantastic.
“It’s great seeing them improve.”
Rennie were fortunate to make the grand final after Duane Rhodes kicked a “floater from the pocket” in the dying seconds to defeat Waaia by a point.
