Fire crews responded to calls for help at roughly 3.30am, arriving to find a home completely engulfed in flames.
The occupant, who had been living in the two-storey home while renovating it, escaped injury after he was roused by his faithful pup.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced.
The timber home was completely destroyed in the fire, but surrounding buildings and neighbouring homes on the outskirts of Myrtleford were kept safe.
Due to the renovations, there were no smoke alarms installed in the property.
Myrtleford Fire Brigade captain Gary Gunson said the occupant was lucky to have escaped unharmed.
“A two-storey timber structure was fully involved by the time we arrived,” he said.
“It was in a remote urban area, and surrounding buildings and properties were not under threat.
“He was very lucky to get out – because it was under renovation, there were no smoke alarms.
“His dog actually alerted him to the fire, that’s probably saved his life.”
