Gypsy Jokers president John Anthony White has been caught driving while on drugs twice, and drink-driving twice.
His history meant his refusal to undergo the test during a traffic stop in Wodonga on May 28 will see him spend a lengthy stint without a licence.
White had been stopped by traffic police on Reid Street about 8.20pm.
Despite repeated requests from the officers for the Gypsy Joker to undergo the drug test, he was not keen.
“No, I have to go and get pills,” he said.
White told the officers he had been trying to get to a chemist before they closed to get medication.
They told him the consequences of refusing to take the test but he still refused.
“It was a very poor choice,” lawyer Geoff Clancy told the Wodonga Magistrates Court recently.
White was served with a temporary licence suspension in June.
Magistrate John Murphy said due to the “crazy law we have”, he was not able to impose a jail term during the court hearing.
Had White been caught drink driving, a prison sentence was possible, the magistrate said.
Mr Murphy said he believed the legislation needed to change given the impact drugs like ice had on the community.
He fined White $1000 and backdated the four-year driving ban to the date his licence was suspended.
White will return to court next month following raids at his home and business by the anti-bikie Echo Taskforce in January.
