Parklands Albury Wodonga ranger Danny Jones, who is also a cat owner, said there were many benefits of pet ownership but people needed to be responsible.
He said endangered squirrel gliders inhabited our region.
“Cats are the ultimate hunters, better than foxes,” he said.
“I saw a cat going toe to toe with a brushtail possum; these bigger possums can fight back but squirrel gliders don’t stand a chance.”
Gardens for Wildlife Albury-Wodonga project officer Lizette Salmon said native animals already faced many threats without cats.
“We encourage desexing to discourage roaming and keeping cats indoors as much as possible, particularly dawn to dusk,” she said.
In Wodonga cats must be confined to the owner’s property from 7pm to 7am.
Spotlighting nights at Felltimber Creek on Monday night and Gateway Island on October 3 are fully booked.
