Emergency services were called to the collision on the Hume Highway, about a kilometre north of Rankins Lane at Holbrook, about 5pm on Sunday.
The 26-year-old driver’s Holden Commodore had run off the side of the road and hit a tree.
The man, who is believed to have been the sole occupant, had to be cut out of the vehicle by volunteers from the SES.
He was flown to hospital in Canberra in a critical condition after being freed.
The man’s condition was unclear on Monday afternoon.
Police said they had not received any further information about the man’s injuries on Monday.
The Victorian registered vehicle, which had been towing a trailer at the time, was extensively damaged during the crash.
The car appeared to have hit the tree in close proximity to the driver’s seat, causing the side of the vehicle to crumple.
Albury police established a crime scene at the site and are investigating the cause of the crash.
The incident came after a horror weekend on the state’s roads, particularly for motorbike riders.
Six people died in NSW, five of whom were motorcyclists.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said motorbike riders were vulnerable on the road.
“As a motorcyclist myself I know how vulnerable you feel when you are on the road,” he said.
“It is up to all of us as riders to make sure we’re as safe as we can be. I would encourage pedestrians and riders to be more aware of their surroundings and for drivers to realise some of their fellow road users are not as protected as they are.”
