McPherson led the Demons into their last finals appearances in 2008 and 2009 and will take over from Jake Phillips and Jordan Harrington.
He retired from playing at Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong in 2014 after injuring his knee.
“My wife Erina plays netball at the club and my family is pretty heavily involved so I thought I might as well put my hand up,” McPherson said.
“It should be good.
“I’ve been out there a bit and I think Lockhart has the numbers and some good kids coming through.
“We’ll see how we go.”
The 2009 Azzi medallist faces a tough task lifting Lockhart up the ladder after it managed five wins in 2017 and three this year.
Although Harrington has moved to North Adelaide, the Demons are confident of keeping their list together.
“I just think we need to top up in a few areas,” McPherson said.
“We were in a lot of games this year.
“My first aim will be to get the boys really fit.”
Lockhart football manager Ian Pertzel said McPherson had a knack of getting the best out of players.
“I think he’ll be really good for our young kids by giving them a bit direction,” Pertzel said.
“When I played footy with him, he was probably one of the hardest blokes I’ve seen in the league.
“I think he’ll give those younger lads a harder edge and hopefully draw a few players with him.
“We’re rapt to have him.”
