They voted 6-2 at last night’s meeting to use $50,000 in YMCA profits to upgrade the Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre’s gym and group fitness rooms so they can run 24 hours per day.
Cr Ashlee Fitzpatrick said the move would be fantastic.
“Not only is it going to be the first 24-7 YMCA in regional Victoria, this is going to increase options for individual and sporting groups, and those who do shift work. This really promotes healthy bodies and healthy minds,” she said.
Cr Dean Rees said the move would allow the gym to make more profits, leading to more development at the WISAC.
“This money will allow works to be done to make us competitive with other gymnasiums that are chockablock at the moment because they’re open 24 hours, seven days a week,” he said.
Mayor Ken Clarke and deputy mayor Mark Currie voted against the move.
“We have not followed due process, we have not given it the time and consideration it deserves,” Cr Currie said.
