Emergency services were called to the waste management depot on Kerr Street at about 7am and an air ambulance helicopter arrived to transport the patient to hospital in Melbourne.
It is believed his hand was amputated when it became caught in a conveyor belt.
Wangaratta Sergeant Trevor Schultz said the cause of the incident was still being investigated.
“We have investigators there and they’ll work with WorkSafe to determine if there’s been any criminal activity,” he said.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the man was working on machinery at the time of the incident and the injuries were not life-threatening.
