Wodonga’s Harris Lee will represent Victoria Country at next month’s national titles in Queensland.
“When I bowl I just make sure I’ve got good rhythm in my run-up,” he said.
“I don’t try and bowl as quick, I just try and get it in the right areas.
“I just get outswing with pace, because I’m so tall, pace just comes naturally.”
The 194cm quick doesn’t necessarily rely on his bounce.
“I’m a bit of a different tall bowler,” he said.
“With the new ball I like to get it up full because I can swing it away from the batsmen and try to nick them out.
“As the innings wears on, as the ball gets older, if nothing’s working, I’ll try and chuck a few short ones in.”
His captain at open-age level in B district has tried to develop that aggressive streak.
“I said, ‘mate, I want a few around the chin’,” Wodonga’s Brad Andrews said.
“The next minute, ‘bang’, snick straight to the keeper.
“I was fielding in close and he said, ‘thanks mate’. I said ‘let’s go again’, he got two wickets in the over.
“He’s just learning, I said to him, ‘it’s not all about bowling up and down mate’, you let them know you’ve got more than one ball in your weaponry.”
Remarkably, the 16-year-old Year 10 student has been playing for only three years.
He was a talented soccer player, representing for the region’s top level club, Murray United FC.
However, he didn’t play the just completed season due to a shoulder injury.
“I’ll probably give soccer the flick,” he said.
“It was definitely soccer for the first 13 years, but after making a few more representative sides, it’s definitely cricket now.”
Victoria will also field a Metro side.
State talent manager Andrew Lynch said the number of talented young Victorians is a sign of a strong future.
“The breadth of talent we have coming through now is a direct result of being able to take both a Country and Metro squad,” Lynch said.
The championships will be held across Mackay and Brisbane from October 1 to 11.
