It’s where the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners co-ordinator earned his nickname “Bumpa”.
“One of the teachers there was Don Farrell (no relation) and he said to me, ‘You’re going to be a little bumpa’,” Mr Farrell recalled.
“I was in Year 2 and the name just stuck like glue.”
Students at Bumpa’s old school have been inspired by his efforts to help drought-stricken farmers and wanted to offer their support.
A recent Dress As A Farmer Day raised more than $500, which will be donated to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners ahead of the next run in January, 2019.
Teacher Michelle Cary said students were increasingly aware of how drought was affecting the country’s farmers.
“They have learnt about how drought affects the cost and supply of food,” she said.
Mr Farrell said the school’s support “means a lot”.
“It’s a great honour given my ultimate goal at school was staying out of detention for a day,” he laughed.
