The Border Mail’s Beau Greenway caught up with the captains and coaches ahead of what’s expected to be another hard-fought summer.
Here’s a look at all the teams:
BARANDUDA
Last season: 7th
Coach: Vince Moran
Captain: Aidan Ryan
Gains: Brett Allan (Tallangatta), Andrew Hird (Bethanga), Tim Farrant, Angus Macauley, Zac Leach
Losses: Ryan Scammell (East Albury), Craig Scammell (retired)
Leading run-scorer last season: Paul Munro (317)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Aidan Ryan (21)
Prospects: Narrowly missed a finals berth last season and have recruited well to boost depth at the club. Have the quality to push into the top-six and win a final.
Coach’s comment: We don’t fall away in any capacity, we’ve got plenty of guys that can do the job with bat and ball.
Prediction: 5th
BARNAWARTHA-CHILTERN
Last season: Not in competition
Coach: Chris Hartshorn
Captain: Matt King
Gains: Beau Kennedy, Matt King (Wodonga), Murray Price (Albury), Chris Hartshorn, Carl Walton (Howlong)
Losses: Nil
Leading run-scorer last season: N/A
Leading wicket-taker last season: N/A
Prospects: The additions of Beau Kennedy and Matt King will help the development of the young players as they find their feet in senior cricket.
Coach’s comment: We were all spread out last year and have come back together, so it will take us four or five games to gel.
Prediction: 7th
BETHANGA
Last season: 11th
Coach: Brett Gilbee
Captain: TBC
Gains: Matt Vinnicombe (Eskdale)
Losses: Haydyn Roberts (North Albury)
Leading run-scorer last season: Brad Taylor (228)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Brodie Sirl (15)
Prospects: Have the potential to cause an upset in the one-day format, but doing it consistently will be the big challenge.
Coach’s comment: It’s new for everyone, if you can get your strategy right you should win most games.
Prediction: 10th
COROWA
Last season: Premier
Coach: Daniel Athanitis
Captain: Daniel Athanitis
Gains: Nil
Losses: Jarrod Lane (travelling)
Leading run-scorer last season: Nathan Rhodes (310)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Mark Athanitis (27)
Prospects: Finished as premiers after a rain-affected grand final against Yackandandah due to being the higher ranked team. Expect them to be around the mark again.
Coach’s comment: It’s hard to say who’s going to win or lose it, but we hope to get ourselves into a position where we can have a crack at it again.
Prediction: 1st
DEDERANG
Last season: 3rd
Coach: Bart Garoni
Captain: Andrew Creamer and Steven Garoni
Gains: Tom McGhee
Losses: Jarrod Lewin (Wodonga), Ethan Albon
Leading run-scorer last season: Andrew Creamer (480)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Andrew Creamer (22)
Prospects: Will be desperate to bounce back after finishing last season as minor premiers and bowing out in the preliminary final.
Coach’s comment: Everyone’s teams are going to be changing all the time, so it will be interesting to see who we’re playing each week.
Prediction: 2nd
ESKDALE
Last season: 8th
Coach: Jamie Baude
Captain: Jamie Baude
Gains: John Purtell (North Albury), Jayaram Jayabalan, Rikk Thompson
Losses: Matt Vinnicombe (Bethanga)
Leading run-scorer last season: Shaun Baude (199)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Jamie Baude (19)
Prospects: Eskdale has traditionally favoured the two-day format and will take time to adjust to a solely one-day season.
Coach’s comment: Hopefully the guys we’ve added help us out in the one-dayers. You have to be a bit more aggressive, but 45 overs is still plenty of time.
Prediction: 8th
HOWLONG
Last season: 10th
Coach: Tim Seymour
Captain: Darren Keenes and Caleb Hobbs
Gains: Aaron Hoskin (Albury)
Losses: Chris Hartshorn, Carl Walton (Barnawartha-Chiltern), Ryan Withers (Ovens Valley United)
Leading run-scorer last season: Tim Seymour (333)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Chris Hartshorn (19)
Prospects: Hoskin will add some class to the side, but the Spiders have lost the players that crossed from Barnawartha-Chiltern last season. Success will hinge on the younger players’ ability to transition into senior cricket.
Coach’s comment: Our bowling and fielding was good last year, but we were unable to make runs or were relying on two or three to make the runs.
Prediction: 9th
KIEWA
Last season: 9th
Coach: Ben Curphey
Captain: Brent de Vries
Gains: Sean Taylor, Shane Streeter, Jason Bartel, Scott Bartel, Josh Bartel
Losses: Ryan Bartel (Tallangatta)
Leading run-scorer last season: Brent de Vries (332)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Brent de Vries (18)
Prospects: Have welcomed back plenty of experience alongside the younger guys that were thrust into senior cricket last season, which should leave the Hawks well placed.
Coach’s comment: We had a lot of kids get blooded last year and they seemed to have developed from what I’ve seen during pre-season.
Prediction: 4th
MOUNT BEAUTY
Last season: 6th
Coach: Senior players
Captain: TBC
Gains: Jake Styles (Belvoir)
Losses: Will Betheras (overseas)
Leading run-scorer last season: Ashan Ranaweera (299)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Daniel Saville (20)
Prospects: The return of 2016-2017 leading wicket-taker Jake Styles is a huge coup and will help the Power push for finals.
Coach’s comment: The first goal is to make finals and anything can happen from there.
Prediction: 6th
YACKANDANDAH
Last season: 2nd
Coach: Paul Wilson
Captain: Andrew Lockett
Gains: Nil
Losses: Akki Murthy (North Albury)
Leading run-scorer last season: Cameron Evans (282)
Leading wicket-taker last season: Andrew Lockett (32)
Prospects: The Roos have maintained the bulk of last year’s side and will be desperate to avenge last season’s grand final loss.
Captain’s comment: Basically the one-dayers bring the whole competition closer together.
Prediction: 3rd
