MOST mountain bike races conjure images of lush green forests and the narrow, treacherous paths weaving their way through the trees – not this one though.

Riding enthusiasts will make the trip up to Falls Creek for the McKayos Ride on Saturday – a 1750-metre descent through the slopes and into Bogong Village.
Starting from the Ski Patrol Base, riders will descend through the slopes, down the Shortcut run and into Slalom Plaza.
From there, they'll make their way through seven kilometres of single-track and fire trails, past the Bogong Power Stretch to the shore of Lake Guy and the finish line at the Bogong Jack's Pub.
As many as 300 riders will tackle the unique course, which kicks off with a somewhat chaotic mass start in the snow.
Named after Mt McKay, the highest point in Australia accessible by vehicle, this year's event won't actually begin from the traditional mountaintop starting point.
For the second year in a row, due to the snow season bringing more than two metres of snow, the start line has been forced to move.
“It was a tough call to take McKay out of McKayos but ultimately we had to do it for the good of the race,” Falls Creek's Jo Prothero said.
“In changing the course we allowed for an earlier start time which is great to get a more frozen track, it also opens up racing on steep ski terrain that we’re otherwise unable to get to.
“Mt McKay will always be the spiritual home of McKayos but the new course is definitely a big improvement.”
This year marks the fourth running of the annual downhill event.
