Schmidt, who had one season at Bunton Park, has returned to South Australia for business reasons.
He captained West Adelaide to the 2015 premiership.
“The year away from state league football has enabled his body to recover to a level where we feel very confident he can impact either as a midfielder or as a half-back,” coach Gavin Colville said.
