The Beechworth-Wodonga Road is undergoing a $9.6 million safety overhaul following 13 serious crashes from June 2010 to August 2016.
Fourteen people were also seriously injured during the period.
The first upgraded section near Wooragee was recently completed, including the installation of safety barriers.
The stretch of road from the Wooragee township and Balaclava Road in Beechworth will be upgraded from next month, with the works expected to be finished by mid-2019.
It had initially been expected that the works would be finished by the end of the year.
The next stage will include wire rope safety barrier installation in high risk areas, rumble strip line marking and a wide centre line.
It had been listed as one of the 20 riskiest roads in country Victoria.
Member for North Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the upgrades would save lives.
“One life lost on our roads is one too many – we’re not wasting a minute delivering these vital upgrades to make Beechworth-Wodonga Road safer for everyone,” she said.
