Officers started using body worn video cameras at the weekend and have already filmed multiple incidents, including a brawl.

The devices are used to gather evidence as it occurs, which can be then presented in court. 

Every officer will be trained in the use of the devices, and it is at the discretion of the police member if they activate them.

Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said the devices could be used for a variety of incidents ranging from hotel walk-throughs to serious offences.

“Any incident the police go to, they can press the button and start recording,” he said.

“You would find the majority of police would wear them and activate them.”

While the use of the devices is discretionary, Detective Inspector Woodward said officers were encouraged to use them. 

Police already use filming devices in vehicles and Tasers. 

Detective Inspector Woodward said most officers in the region had been trained to use the new body cameras. 

“It could be a general duties officer who's wearing them, it could be a detective who's wearing them, it could be a drug unit member who's wearing them,” he said. 

"They're very helpful. 

“They capture a lot of people who tell us one thing and when they get to court they say another thing. 

“It helps with the collection of evidence.”

Research shows the while the devices can improve offender behaviour, they can also lead to improved officer conduct and professionalism, and a reduction in complaints. 

The devices have been used in other areas for several years.
