Victorian David McKenzie is currently sitting 52nd on the PGA Tour Champions, one position ahead of 1992 US Masters winner Fred Couples.
“It’s an incredible effort because the Champions Tour is so tough to get onto,” Golf NSW media and digital manager David Tease said.
“These guys are stars, Bernhard Langer and Miguel Angel Jimenez, they’re global stars of the game.”
Langer boasts an incredible 112 professional wins, including the Masters in 1985 and 1993.
McKenzie finished tied for 18th in the seniors’ $2.1 million event which finished on Sunday.
“I’d imagine David would probably be one of the players to beat,” Tease said of the October 26-28 event.
“It’s a better field than last year, with the exception of Ian Baker-Finch.”
Thurgoona staged last year’s inaugural $100,000 event, attracting Australia’s best players aged 50 plus.
“Peter Fowler is an Australian Open champion and he also won on the European Senior Tour in late August,” Tease said.
“Michael Long won on the Australian tour this year, claiming the West Australian PGA against the younger guys.”
Australian Open champions Peter Lonard and Peter Senior will be sentimental favourites.
