Debate around Stanley’s groundwater has continued to flow, with Benambra candidate Jenny O’Connor questioning the data relied on by those who support using the resource for bottled water.

Cr O’Connor called this number “ridiculous” to rely on, as she does not believe Stanley’s groundwater levels are monitored at all.
“We know the bores have run dry in Stanley so clearly the groundwater doesn’t always last,” she said.
An independent hydrologist has challenged figures for Stanley used by Goulburn Murray Water, saying the town’s water comes out of a different aquifer than the company is measuring, and is instead reliant on rainfall.
“I want to see a rigorous scientific investigation into actually determining once and for all what in fact, is the hydrology is in the area,” Cr O’Connor said.
“Nobody knows.”
