Victoria Police is rolling out new automatic number plate recognition systems for highway patrol vehicles.
The units allow police to check registration plates at a rapid rate and detect unregistered vehicles and cars linked to banned drivers.
The system, which will also including video recording, will be installed during the next three years.
The first vehicles will be in use early next year.
