THE Tallangatta caravan park has been presented with an unexpected potential funding windfall if the Coalition is returned to government at next month’s state election.

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley announced yesterday a Liberal-Nationals government would tip $1 million into a refurbishment of the park including creation of waterfront villas, a children’s jumping pillow, playground and upgraded caravan and camping sites.
“It’s unfinished business,” Mr Tilley said.
“The last time the Liberal-Nationals were in government we worked in strong partnership with the Towong Shire and $68,000 was invested into a plan for this precinct.
“Going into an election we are continuing that work and bringing important investment into this site to realise its full potential.
“Towong Shire has a great potential for tourism and a Liberal-National Coalition would love to invest and realise that great potential.”
Goulburn Murray Water owns the caravan park which almost closed in 2013 when updates to Country Fire Authority Authority regulations were ordered.
The council has floated the option of buying the park and leasing to a commercial operator.
Mr Tilley said the upgrade would be delivered in the first budget of a Liberal-Nationals government.
Cr David Wortmann said Towong Shire welcome the $1 million funding pledge.
“This investment ties in perfectly,” he said.
“The infrastructure here in the park is coming to the end of its life.
“It will not only be a boost for Tallangatta, but the whole region.
“It is a spectacular sight here right on the edge of Lake Hume and when the park has high visitation it is great for the town.
“There is a flow-on effect for businesses and it creates a great vibe around town.”
Towong Shire confirmed GMW had recently been testing the market for interest in the park.
“If GMW is unable to find a suitable private operator council would consider managing or acquiring the park,” a council spokesperson said.
The council also missed out on funding for a project in Corryong from the federal government in the same funding round as the Tallangatta caravan park.
It included upgraded pedestrian and cycling links with key Upper Murray tourism spots and council was considering its next move on the project.
