Potentially the biggest football story of the summer, the former Wodonga Raiders’ mentor has a two-year deal with the wooden spooners.
Cresswell’s shock decision has stunned the league after he indicated he would take next year off after four years.
He guided Raiders out of the wilderness, taking them to four straight finals series after they won only six games in the previous two years.
Rovers haven’t played finals since 2014 and have racked up just 13 wins in the past four years.
The Hawks snared last season’s wooden spoon, posting their only winless season in 68 years.
Given his time at AFL level and extensive coaching across a number of competitions, including a stint in Queensland, Cresswell boasts a strong recruiting background.
He lured boom midfielder Brodie Filo from the Gouburn Valley and he’s finished runner-up and won the Morris Medal in his two-year stint, while fellow GV import Daniel Bowles also impressed this year.
