Dale, who at the time had melanoma which had spread, was determined to participate despite his illness.
He completed 10 laps.
This year, although Dale was not able to be there, he was not far from anyone's thoughts.
Dale, who died on December 29, was named the 2018 Border Relay For Life Hero.
His wife, Kate, shared their love story and struggles with Dale’s cancer with those gathered at Relay.
Dale’s parents Rod and Dianne, of Traralgon, said with was an incredible honour to be at the event and see Dale honoured in such a way.
“We’re here to honour Dale and support Kate but it’s also about thanking Kate for what she did as Dale’s carer,” Rod said.
“The community here was really important to Dale.
“Albury quickly became his home and it’s amazing to see the Border get out and support this cause.”
