Amateur Murray stunned the golfing fraternity in claiming the West Australian Open on Sunday.
Greg Norman won the event in 1986.
The 21-year-old finished on 16-under, toppling long-time amateur rival David Micheluzzi by two shots, with long-time ACT professional Matthew Millar a further shot back.
Murray fired four successive rounds under par at the Mt Lawley Golf Club in Perth.
He started with a superb eight-under, one of the finest rounds of his career.
The tall right-hander followed that with two-under 70 and 69 heading into the final round.
Murray made birdies on the first and third holes, but also grabbed a bogey on the par-three 8th.
He made another bogey on 14, but sealed victory with three successive birdies from 15.
Murray headed into what he hoped was the first of four professional tournaments in the coming weeks with an open mind on turning professional.
The upset win will certainly give the big-hitting youngster plenty to ponder as he considers giving up the amateur life for the dog-eat-dog world of a professional.
Murray is also set to play the Queensland Open, with his win in the west to boost his profile with the NSW and Australian Opens coming up.
Traditionally, amateurs haven’t been allowed to pocket pro prizemoney.
