The United Petroleum outlet, which has the Border’s first Pie Face bakery, will begin trading in the next seven to 10 days.

United chief operating officer David Szymczak said “everyone is very excited” about the opening which follows eight months of work at the site near the intersection of the freeway and McKoy Street.

The development of the business, which will trade around-the-clock, prompted VicRoads to modify the McKoy Street freeway crossing and introduce a permanent 80km/h speed limit at the site.

The rejig, which opened in September, has drawn criticism for being more dangerous than the original layout, however VicRoads regional director Nicki Kyriakou said it was safer.

VicRoads fought the development in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal due to concerns about increased traffic flow and lost although United was ordered to fund the freeway changes.

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley, a critic of the development and VicRoads’ response, said since the opening of the revamped intersection he had received a stream of negative feedback.

“A lot of people are saying it’s a dog’s breakfast and how dangerous it is and that they’re avoiding it,” he said.

“I get comments daily and I get people saying ‘you’re not responsible for that mess are you?’ and I say ‘I am certainly trying to fix it and the only solution is a flyover’.”

Mr Tilley said he had witnessed a truck having to move into the freeway’s emergency stopping lane to avoid crashing into another heavy vehicle which had slowed to turn at the intersection.

“There’s been a lot of near misses with cars having to brake heavily when a truck crosses over (the freeway from the centre median),” he said. 

The Liberal MP is noting the feedback he receives and plans to present it to the roads authority.

Meanwhile, a new BP service station opened at Thurgoona on Monday.

The fuel hub is part of a project near the intersection of Thurgoona Drive and Table Top Road which will eventually have a McDonald’s restaurant that has drawn flak from the community.

The BP, which is legally able to open 24 hours a day, will have trading hours of 5am to 11pm for the time being.
