Hay runners founder Brendan Farrell announced the hay run on Facebook explaining he liked heading to destinations “where people don’t even know there’s people half the time”.
He called on any interested truck drivers to contact him – “don’t swamp me on the phone yet” – and see if they could contact their mates to get a bit of hay on.
“I want to see 500 of my good mates join me to put one good show on the road,” he said.
At the forefront of the feisty truckie’s mind is showing drought-stricken farmers their fellow Aussies still care.
“A lot of them, in the last six months, are saying exactly that … they’ve been forgotten about,” he said.
“I think about them every day – as I’m carting hay, cutting hay, raking hay...”
Mr Farrell said with fuel prices heading up to the $1.75 to $1.82-a-litre mark, fundraising was critical to get the maximum number of trucks on the road.
The convoy will head to Charleville before cutting across to Quiplie and will also deliver hay to Eulo and Thargomindah.
