Albury Council and NSW Police have called on community vigilance after an audit revealed equipment had been stolen or damaged from at least eight playgrounds.
Councillor Henk van de Ven said in the most alarming incident a slide was unbolted from the ground a Jelbart Park, leaving it at risk of collapsing under the weight of children.
“Irresponsible actions such as unbolting children’s slides from the ground could lead to serious injury to youngsters who have a right to expect a safe place to play in our parks,” Cr van de Ven said.
“Not only are these incidents thefts from local families, they also show a callous disregard for the children who play on the equipment.”
Swings, climbing nets and rails were also stolen from parks at Oddies Creek, Lara Lakes and Fellows Parks.
At Heathwood Park a seat and table were unbolted and moved. Albury council and police are concerned for the safety of children if the attacks continues.
FOR MORE CRIME NEWS:
Inspector Scott Russell urged residents living near parks to keep and eye out for suspicious behaviour.
“Theft or damage at playgrounds for children is bad enough but tampering with this type of equipment can be very dangerous,” he said.
“Some of the parks are close to homes and busy roads so we’re calling on anyone who’s seen suspicious activities in those playgrounds to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 and help us to track down the offenders responsible.”
All equipment targeted in the destructive spree has been made safe for use by Albury council staff.
Council staff will continue to monitor playgrounds as police investigate the incidents.
Council also reported swings and a climbing net had been removed from Bowna Reserve, while swings had been wrapped around the top bar at Hume Gardens and screws were removed from a gate at Alexandra Park.
