Speight is set to sever ties with Bacchus Marsh with the Magpies believed to be leading the race for his signature.
Coach Luke Morgan confirmed he has spoken to Speight and fellow premiership star Josh Porter but said nothing had been finalised.
Speight kicked 39 goals as a small forward for Bacchus Marsh under former North Albury coach Travis Hodgson this year.
Morgan, who recently took over from Dean Stone following six years at Benalla, has made no secret of the fact that he wants to bolster Wangaratta’s attack to relieve the pressure on full-forward Michael Newton.
Newton kicked 81 majors this year with Mitch Jensen next on 35.
Wangaratta has already lured former premiership player Daine Porter back to the club after playing in Ovens and King league club Tarrawingee’s flag.
