Victoria Police spokesman Inspector Ian Geddes said in a statement investigators were told the woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was located with burns at a property about 9.20pm on Tuesday.
“She was air-lifted to hospital in a critical condition,” he said.
“A 47-year-old man who was home at the time is assisting police with their enquiries.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.”
While there were few details available, police investigators including forensics, arson chemists and Wodonga detectives stayed at the property throughout Wednesday, inspecting the home and sheds in the backyard.
The property is semi-rural and bordered by the Hume Freeway and the Melbourne to Albury rail line on either side.
A Hazchem sign could be seen on the front fence at the entrance to the property.
The woman is undergoing surgery.
