After being weighed down by travelling from Melbourne to the McNamara Reserve last season, Burgess has made the gut-wrenching decision to leave his home club.
Burgess and co-coach Tim Looby are the only departures from the Saints who have been a pacesetter in the recruiting stakes over the off-season with Jake Sharp, Tom McDonagh, Nathan Laracy, Riley O’Shea, Jake Richards and Brody Ricardi committing.
He had a pretty tough year this year with travel. That was the final factor.

“He had a pretty tough year this year with travel,” Sharp said.
“That was the final factor.
“Christian said he’ll be back one day which is great.
“We have had a positive off-season and are looking forward to starting pre-season.”
Myrtleford kicked off training on Monday night with Sharp hopeful of landing several more recruits before the end of the month.
Burgess set the Ovens and Murray alight in 2016 before having a brief stint with VFL club Coburg.
He battled injury this season and is hoping for a change of fortune without the hassles of travelling from Melbourne.
Former Collingwood women’s assistant coach Harmit Singh coaches Vermont with Marty Pask his assistant.
Meanwhile, 2014 Did Simpson Medallist Connor Hargreaves has applied for a clearance to join Picola league club Strathmerton.
Hargreaves became the first player in history to win the medal in a losing side when he was judged best on ground in Yarrawonga’s loss to Albury.
