Former Adelaide airport worker Max McCardle stunned the field when he shared the lead at eight-under par after the first two rounds, while the ACT’s Matthew Millar finished tied for fifth on that same score.
Corowa product Marcus Fraser finished a shot better in fourth, although he’s yet to confirm his availablity for the Border’s December 5 event, which he contested last year.
In a further boost, and a rarity for the 18-hole event, it will also feature a player who tackled the year’s last major.
Queenslander Craig Hocknull contested his first major – the US PGA Championship.
“He’s coming out to play Tour School for our (Australasian) Tour next year, so he’ll play Albury and Shepparton the week before as warm-ups,” tournament coordinator Heath McLeod said.
Rising Border stars – Zach Murray and Frazer Droop – will also play.
“Certainly Millar, Hocknull, Murray and McCardle would be the top end of the field,” McLeod said.
“It's fantastic, it all bodes well for the event to have guys of that calibre in the field.”
